Q: What settings should I be using in Windows Media Player?

Open Windows Media player, then go to the Tools menu and select ‘Options’.  Select the 'player' tab.  Check the 'Download Codecs Automatically' box just under 'Automatic Updates'.  Click ‘Apply’ or ‘OK’.

Next, check your proxy settings or set them to ‘autodetect’ as follows:  In Windows Media Player, click the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Options’.  Click the ‘Network’ tab and verify the settings in the ‘Streaming Proxy Settings’ area.  If you do not know what your proxy server settings should be, select a protocol, click ‘Configure’ and then select ‘Autodetect proxy settings’ or ‘Use proxy settings of the Web browser’ (available for HTTP protocol only).  This will help if you are experiencing streaming errors.
